#12 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2024
Bin 389 was often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz. Exemplifying the judicious balance of fruit and oak, Bin 389 highlights the generous mid-palate Penfolds in known for.
Blend: 51% Cabernet, 49% Shiraz
Wine Enthusiast- Rich, inky-hued and packed with layers of aromas (think: plush blackberries and violets backed by more savory notes of dried herbs, tar and gravel, and a smoky, charred, pan scrapings nuance), Bin 389 is an incredibly polished, silky wine. Dense and powerful, yes, but with a satiny cushion of dark fruit that rises up to meet the monstrous tannins, taming them into a classy-as-hell wine to drink now with decanter and protein at hand, or to cellar for several decades
Wine Spectator-First made in 1960 by the renowned Max Schubert, this bottling is referred to by wine lovers as “baby Grange” in part because the wine is aged in the American oak barrels that were used in the previous vintage of the flagship Grange bottling. Whereas Grange sees 100% new oak, Bin 389’s percentage is about one-third new. Some of the magic of Grange’s generosity and seamlessness always seems to rub off on this classic Australian blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz from five vineyards across Australia. 8,565 cases imported.
