49% Syrah, 35% Mourvedre, 16% Petite Sirah
Broodingly dark yet delicately layered, the 2016 Level 22 at first glance and smell bolsters notes of black olives, bacon fat, and molasses,only to be subdued by a strong presence of lavender and tobacco notes that bring an ethereal motif to the wine. Sweet background notes of brambly blackberry, brown sugar, and vanilla give the nose a lift from the denser aromas. A concentrated entry of ripe black cherry, dragon fruit, and pomegranate, along with a moderate acidity, persist well into the mid-palate before a velvety tannin makes it presence known. A suddenly savory palate of plush tannins make for a long finish that begs to be enjoyed again.
