Le Lion de La Fleur de Boüard is smooth and big, and expresses intense fruit highlighted by careful ageing for 16 months, with 15% of the wine residing in new oak barrels, which imparts elegant woody notes. It is a marvelous match with braised beef, calf’s head in vinaigrette or glazed pork ribs. Made from a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Le Lion de La Fleur de Boüard is made from the estate’s young vines by Hubert de Boüard de Laforest the co-owner of Chateau Angélus. It has been Château La Fleur de Boüard’s second wine since 2011. It is gently fermented in the same way as the main wine in inverted truncated cone-shaped tanks before being vinified using gravity alone.
Blend: 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon
James Suckling- Lots of blueberry and blackberry character with firm, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. It’s full-bodied and very polished. Plenty of tar and dark fruit.
Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate- Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Le Lion storms out of the glass with bold notes of baked black plums, blackberry pie and boysenberries, plus suggestions of dried Provence herbs, pencil shavings and unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers taut, muscular black fruits with a firm frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy.
Jeb Dunnuck- Always impeccably made, the 2020 Le Lion De La Fleur De Boüard (which is the entry level wine) offers a beautifully pure perfume of red and blue fruits as well as leafy tobacco, leather, and chocolate. It’s balanced, medium-bodied, has ripe, silky tannins, and great finish. It’s well worth seeking out and a beautiful Right Bank that will keep for 7-8 years with no issues.
